Vocabulary Notebook SUK3 Part1 Hendrik

Hello!

Every day I encounter new words in English and every time I see them as a challenge I need to face, that is to learn these words. Judging from my experience of memorising new vocabulary, the best and the most efficient way for me is making vocabulary cards. I write down words with their collocations or example sentences. I look through these cards very often. This is what I have done while learning Porter words from units 1-6.
At the moment I am in process of memorising 329 Porter words from units 7-11. By the way, I need to do it till Thursday. This time I decided not to write down all unknown words but to create a list on vocabulary.com which very easy. After completing the list I will revise it several times.
The number of words is too big :(

Wish Me Luck!

My Pecha Kucha Experience SUK3 Part1 Hendrik

Hello everyone!

Pecha Kucha? I have heard about such kind of presentation for the first time in my life. 20 slides 20 seconds for each of them. It sounded complicated at first, but now it appears to me to be the best and the most productive way of presenting anything.

I was working on Pecha Kucha together with Vika (Viktoriia Nikitina ;-). We enjoyed the process of making our presentation on the Russian language in the EU soo much. Ar first we thought that 20 seconds was too little to say something meaningful, but we changed our mind immediately, once we discovered that it was possible to deliver four complete lines within this time. Moreover, the structure of Pecha Kucha requires that the information is very well chosen and processed; so, there is no time to waste time actually :) Furthermore, 20 slides is more than enough, the timing is perfect and, what is the most important, the presentation itself is not too long and there is not enough tome to get bored by it.

Me and Vika were satisfied with the result. Judging from the feedback given by our groupmates, our presentation was interesting and funny. Especially they liked the pictures, we have created based on Russian cartoons. Thank you, guys, for feedback!

Have I to make a presentation next time, I will definitely use Pecha Kucha.

Proceeding with the Pronunciation Practice SUK3 Part1 Hendrik

Hello!

Recently I have received a feedback on my pronunciation. To begin with, shame on me for mispronouncing the words 'spiral' and 'dinosaur'. I have looked the transcriptions for those words: ['spaɪər(ə)l] and ['daɪnəsɔː]. Now I am sure that I will never say this words incorrectly.

Secondly, the word 'board' sounded more like [bo:t] than [bɔːd]. In order to practice sound /d/ at the end of words I have found such lists: wordHIPPO and 5 letter words ending in d. While practicing it, I realised that it was necessary to find out after which sounds D sounded like /d/ and /t/. So, there are 3 ways to pronounce the final -ed in a word:
  1. -ed = /id/
  2. -ed = /d/
  3. -ed = /t/
If the last sound of the word is unvoiced  except t, the-ed will sound like /t/: kissed, hoped.
If the last sound of the word is voiced  except d, the -ed will sound like /d/: learned, played.
If the last sound to the word is /d/ or /t/, the -ed will sound like /id/: wanted, sounded.
If you are not sure if a sound is voiced or unvoiced, put your hand on your throat when you say the sound. If it is voiced, you will feel a vibration, or movement, in your throat. If it is unvoiced, you will feel nothing in your throat.

Thirdly, I had to practice the [ŋ] sound. "ing" is pronounced lightly. The "g" is silent, but indicates a nasal ending. This ending is created by pressing the back of the tongue against the top of the mouth which causes air to go into the nose. If you struggle with the nasal ending, think of "ing" as "eeng." Forming a long E helps some students pronounce "ing." With nasal sounds, you can actually feel the sound in your nose if you think about it.

It is worth mentioning that I am still working on Dearest Creature in Creation (text). I have recorded myself already several times.

Then, I have noticed that when I speak quickly in English my tongue twists, so I practice Eminem's songs (who is soo fast) in order to overcome this problem.

Thanks for your attention!
